A content strategist’s view of SEO

I haven’t written much on search engine optimization, for a couple of reasons. For one, there are far too many self-styled experts on the matter, many of whom bilk unsuspecting folks out of hard-earned money while getting themselves and their clients on Mountain View’s hit list; mom told me never to hang with a bad crowd. Additionally, I’ve been working at firms that had staff dedicated to the matter, so I spent my time pestering them to write about it.

But SEO principles are always on the mind of a content strategist and creator, else the world turns without being made aware of a wonderful highlight of the 2010 GMC Whatever. Moreover, most of the available quick-and-dirty content on search engine optimization principles or strategy often focuses on 1-5 tactical considerations. Unless you’re willing to plunk down in your chair for a webinar or attend a full-blown conference, you may be left with the impression that SEO is all about backlinks, keywords, and Twitter trends. A style guide authority must have authority

I’ve only occasionally discussed style guides before, and then chiefly to lament their being stuck in MS Office purgatory. Frankly, it’s just not a terribly exciting topic; besides, a style guide is one of those things many marketers and communicators hate to love. But I was recently asked a question that made me think we need to discuss them more.

The query was about tricky situations in enforcing style and how to deal with them, and I immediately thought of my time at my last job. This was a small web marketing agency—sometimes big enough to field a baseball team, other times just big enough to have a starting basketball roster and a sixth man—and I was responsible for maintaining style points and curating our content. A few fall hijinks

It’s been a rare fall here in Texas—meaning that we’ve actually experienced something approximating one, rather than the usual blistering-hot-to-brief-freeze we experience in the October to February corridor.
